What Size Should My Dog’s Collar Be?

One of the most common questions we get asked is “does my dog’s collar fit?” or “what size dog collar should I buy?”

While the colour of the dog collar may seem like the most important thing in the world, there are three more important things that every responsible owner should take into account when buying a collar for man’s best friend:

1/ Don’t skimp on quality.

If your pooch’s collar breaks while you’re holding a struggling dog back from a dangerous situation, you’re going to wish you spent the extra money on a better collar.

2/ Puppies grow.

Think of your dog’s collar like a piece of clothing, buy a larger one as they outgrow it or get one with an adjustable buckle. Don’t risk buying a giant collar for a little puppy and losing control of your fur baby near a road.

3/ Some materials stretch and wear over time, others don’t.

Houndztooth’s leather dog collars and leads are designed to retain their size, shape and quality throughout their lifetime, but not all collars are the same.

When looking at the Houndztooth’s dog collar and leash range, we recommend measuring your dog’s neck to make sure you get the right size.

For a proper fit, measure your dog’s neck with a cloth seamstress’s tape measure. Pull the tape snug but not tight. If you do not have a tape measure, you can use a piece of string and then measure the string with a rigid ruler.

When looking at sizes, you want there to be a gap between your dog’s neck and the collar to ensure comfort, but not so much that they can slip it off. Make sure you can slip two fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck.

If your hound has long fur and gets regular haircuts (hello, ‘poodle’ owners!), make sure you buy a dog collar with an adjustable buckle so you can loosen it as your pup’s hair grows back.

Houndztooth dog collar sizes:

Houndztooth small/medium dog collars are 27-37cm in length.

Houndztooth medium/large dog collars are 35-45cm in length.

And remember, for stronger or boisterous dogs, a thicker dog collar will provide more support, but they may be too heavy for smaller breeds.
