How To Soothe Your Dog’s Itchy Skin

There may be no sadder thing in life than when your furry friend looks up at you with big, sad eyes because it has sore, sensitive and itchy skin.

As always, prevention is the best cure and there are lots of simple things you can do to help prevent your doggo from getting itchy by naturally treating the itchy skin.

Give them a daily food supplement

Get ahead of the itchiness by adding a small amount of our Hemp Seed Oil for dogs to your pup’s dinner. When added to your dog’s daily diet, our hemp oil for dogs works to reduce inflammation associated with common skin conditions and helps prevent common skin problems from occurring.

Use a topical treatment

Houndztooth specialises in dog shampoo for itchy skin, and while all our products are made with ingredients that are designed to soothe your dog’s skin, Coco’s Blend No.4 Rescue and Relief Spray has been specially formulated to keep your pooch’s skin happy and itch-free.

For particularly nasty bouts of itchiness, you can also apply our Hemp Seed Oil for dogs directly to the site of the itching or try our new Hemp Seed Oil/Shampoo Blend. Always apply to a small amount to a test area on your dog and leave for 60 minutes before applying more generously.

Wash them with a natural dog shampoo

Finding the right pet shampoo and conditioner for your dog’s skin is crucial. The Houndztooth grooming range is made with goat milk which has been used for hundreds of years to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. We love our new Hemp Shampoo which combines our Australian hemp seed oil and goat milk to provide an intensive conditioning shampoo (similar to using a conditioning treatment in your own hair), specifically formulated for dogs with sensitive and itchy skin. We recommend combining both our Hemp Shampoo with regular washes using our Stella’s Blend No.2 Dog Shampoo formulated with Manuka Honey essential oil. This helps reduce redness and heals congested or inflamed skin and eczema.

Wipe your dog’s paws and tummy after rolling on grass

Sadly grass is often full of lots of little things that can trigger a mild reaction in dogs that could leave exposed skin itchy and aggravated. By simply spraying some Coco’s Blend No. 3 Rescue and Relief Spray onto a face washer and wiping your pooch’s tummy and paws after playing in the grass, you can stop these reactions before they take hold.

Change their diet

Diet is one of the most common causes of itchy skin in dogs. There may be something in your dog’s food that is upsetting the skin’s natural balance and causing a skin condition to develop. Have a chat with your vet about a raw diet and how to transition your dog onto new food.

Spray their bed with a pet conditioner

Given dogs can spend around 18-20 hours a day lying in their beds, spray their bedding with our Coco’s Blend No.4 Rescue and Relief Spray a few times a week to help keep their skin moisturised, nourished and soothed. We always recommend spraying a small test area of your dog’s bed first.
